Vitamin K is an essential nutrient as it helps the blood to clot, reduces the risk of internal haemorrhaging and works quickly as soon as a wound occurs. Vitamin K is fat soluble and manufactured by bacteria in the intestines which mostly meets the body’s needs. Other sources include food such as pistachio nuts, vegetable oils, meat, cheese, egg yolks and liver.

Although deficiencies are rare, Vitamin K is often recommended by doctors to help reduce blood loss after surgery and newborn babies are also offered Vitamin K as an injection as they lack the intestinal bacteria in early life. Some research studies have suggested that Vitamin K can help to build strong bones and prevent osteoporosis by supporting the body to absorb calcium.
