Biotin

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Biotin is a vitamin (Vitamin H) that is part of the Vitamin B complex and is essential for the breakdown of fats and sustaining metabolic functions. Biotin plays a beneficial role in the body as it works to maintain healthy skin, strengthen nails and hair, produce enzymes to breakdown fats, carbohydrates and proteins in foods so they can be utilised by the body. Biotin may also benefit suffers of diabetes as it works to help to sustain healthy levels of blood sugar.

Although a deficiency of Biotin is rare as it is contained in many food sources including liver, peanuts, egg yolks, mushrooms, bananas and grapefruit to name a few, a supplement may be recommended to you by your health practitioner if you have had long term antibiotics or showing signs of a deficiency which includes hair loss, inflammation of the tongue, loss of appetite and weakness or tiredness.

Biotin is also a water soluble vitamin which means it can only be stored in the body for certain amounts of time before it is excreted as urine. Therefore a supplement of Biotin on its own or combined in a multivitamin may boost and maintain good levels of this vital vitamin in the body.
